Mike McDermott has been involved with the building industry for over 20 years. While obtaining his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, he blended his theoretical training with practical applications by working full-time for a general contractor, architect and refrigeration contractor during the course of his education. With this unique combination of training, he has developed the skills necessary to provide clear, practical, builder-friendly construction documents.

In 1985, he started McDermott Design and quickly earned a reputation for providing detailed construction documents for new and remodel residential work along with commercial tenant improvement projects. These services were later expanded to include mechanical engineering - HVAC, plumbing and energy consulting.

In 1997, he purchased Valley Energy Consultants – a company which specializes in energy compliance consulting for the building industry. These energy compliance services blended well with the mechanical engineering and building design provided by McDermott Design. Given the name recognition of both companies in their respective niches in the building industry, Mike decided to keep both companies independent for marketing purposes, but unite them together under The McDermott Group as a single entity.

Today, Mike serves as the principal mechanical engineer and design consultant for McDermott Design and lead technical advisor for Valley Energy Consultants.

Benjamin joined Valley Energy Consultants in 2006 as an Energy Compliance Specialist.   His practical knowledge and field experience with the building industry is a tremendous asset in consulting others on energy compliance alternatives for their construction projects.   He is well versed in energy compliance consulting within California using the Title 24 energy code – and across the country using the EPA’s Model Energy Code along with state-specific energy programs.

Benjamin’s excellent client relations and attention to detail are an integral part of the success of The McDermott Group and Valley Energy Consultants.
